Brief description:
The youth work programme complements the schools activity by focusing on youth workers, managers, volunteers and those who work directly with young people in East Glasgow. PMA does this by providing free mental health awareness training throughout the year for these workers and volunteers. Participants also receive a workshop pack and accompanying DVD.
Aims:
The training PMA delivers aims to improve staff confidence in engaging young people in a discussion about mental health, to provide information on both positive mental health and mental health problems and the support available.
What’s happening:
PMA have received good uptake from voluntary and statutory organisations in East Glasgow over a two year period. Sessions have been delivered to various organisations including; Glasgow City Council Culture & Sport Youth Services, Parkhead Youth Project, Dalmarnock Youth Project, Barnardos, social work students, Social Work Department (Children & Families), Glasgow East Women’s Aid, Careers Scotland, Eastend Youth Café, Playbusters and many more including volunteers from churches and youth projects.
Evaluation and feedback:
The training sessions are continually evaluated with positive feedback from participants:
“It’s a good way for people dealing directly with young people to get more info and resources concerning mental health and its impacts, implications etc.”
“I think the DVD is a good aid for group work with young people.”
Feedback of learning from the sessions include:
“That there are a lot of issues involving mental health e.g. family, eating disorders etc. The places you can refer young people to…”
“That there is a lot of support, solutions and positive outcomes available to someone experiencing mental health concerns and that we are part of the solution.”
