Training for Services and ‘Inside Stories’ Film
Brief description:
PMA lead a large scale programme which aims to understand and improve the mental health of asylum seekers and refugees in East Glasgow and across the city.
The first stage of this work kicked off with a research project directly involving over 100 asylum seekers and refugees in exploring the issues; leading to the subsequent projects that now make up the Sanctuary programme.
The unique research, titled Sanctuary*, closely led to the development of a carefully tailored training course initially for NHS staff, exploring the impact of asylum seeking on mental health.
The production of ‘Inside Stories’ by Diversity Films, which captures personal experiences of asylum seekers and refugees in Scotland on film, was also developed to enhance the training course for service providers as well as the community conversations workshops.
*Sanctuary: exploring and addressing mental health stigma and discrimination with asylum seekers and refugees in Glasgow (2008)
Aims:
To ensure services, including broader services such as housing and finances, are more sensitive and well equipped to the mental health needs of asylum seekers and refugees.
What’s happening:
This film is the first of its kind in Scotland and fills a gap identified by partners of information about asylum issues for services. A resource is being developed to accompany the film and will be targeted to staff who interact with and provide services to asylum seekers and refugees.
